It is quite common to confuse OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) with KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). Additionally, it is also common to mix up key results with key performance indicators. This article explores the differences between OKRs and KPIs.

Difference Between OKR and KPI

OKRs stands for “Objectives and Key Results,” a collaborative goal-setting framework that enables organizations to define and achieve ambitious objectives.

On the other hand, KPI stands for “Key Performance Indicator,” a performance measurement tool. These indicators allow organizations or individuals to track their progress over time toward strategic objectives.

Sounds similar to OKRs, right? Yes, but they’re different. While both facilitate performance management, Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) provide value in distinct ways.

OKRs are a strategy execution framework. In contrast, KPIs are operational metrics that track the status of activities. KPIs provide insights into performance concerning goal achievement, helping to identify deviations in time to make corrections.

Moreover, OKRs help define and communicate priorities. They identify the most critical initiatives for an organization or team in the near future, ensuring the allocation of necessary resources for execution. On the other hand, KPIs measure the progress of a specific initiative or activity. An organization or team can monitor dozens or even hundreds of KPIs to evaluate its progress toward desired outcomes.
